Being Poor Is Expensive: Uncovering the Hidden Costs of Poverty

by HudaSani

In a world of growing economic disparity, the stark reality is that being poor is expensive. This paradoxical phenomenon may not be immediately apparent, but when we delve into the intricacies of poverty, we discover that the cost of living for the poor is significantly higher compared to their more affluent counterparts.

Have you ever think why being poor can be financially burdensome and the far-reaching implications it has on individuals and society as a whole.

1. Quantity Premiums: The Burden of Buying in Small Quantities

One of the foremost reasons why poverty is expensive is the challenge of buying in bulk. For individuals or families living paycheck to paycheck, purchasing goods in larger quantities to benefit from economies of scale is often a luxury they cannot afford. This results in what economists refer to as "quantity premiums." Poor households end up paying more per unit for essential items like food, toiletries, and household supplies, compared to those who can buy in larger quantities.

2. Location Matters: The High Cost of Living in Disadvantaged Areas

Many impoverished individuals find themselves residing in areas with higher transportation and infrastructure costs. These areas are often characterized by limited access to quality education, healthcare, and job opportunities. As a consequence, the prices of goods and services in these regions are inflated, further straining the financial resources of those already struggling to make ends meet. This disparity in living costs is a stark example of how poverty compounds itself.

Beyond the immediate financial strain, the higher cost of living associated with poverty exacerbates other development challenges, perpetuating the cycle of disadvantage.

1. Limited Investment in Education and Opportunities

The poor often find it challenging to invest in education or access opportunities that can lead to long-term benefits. The cycle of poverty restricts their ability to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to escape its grasp. This not only hampers personal growth but also hinders economic development on a broader scale.

2. Environmental Consequences

Poverty-induced financial constraints may force individuals to opt for cheaper but more environmentally damaging solutions. For instance, using cheaper, less eco-friendly fuel sources becomes a necessity when the cost of cleaner alternatives is prohibitive. This can contribute to increased carbon emissions and environmental degradation, impacting us all.

Tackling the problem of poverty premiums and creating a fairer society requires a multifaceted approach. Here are some strategies to consider:

1. Strengthening Social Protection Systems by implementing robust social safety nets can provide a financial buffer for the poor, helping them avoid high-cost loans and making ends meet during difficult times.

2. Boosting Agricultural Development via investments in agriculture can empower rural communities and reduce their dependence on costly imported food items, thereby lowering overall living costs.

3. Investing in Financial Infrastructure by expanding access to affordable financial services, such as microloans and savings accounts, can help the poor manage their finances more efficiently and escape the poverty trap.

4. Leveraging Innovation by utilizing technological advancements can lead to cost-effective solutions, such as mobile banking and online marketplaces, which can benefit the poor by reducing transaction costs.

5. Efficient Supply Chains will helps streamlining supply chains and reducing intermediaries can lower the prices of essential goods, making them more affordable for everyone.

In conclusion, being poor is undeniably expensive, and this harsh reality perpetuates a cycle of disadvantage that affects individuals and society as a whole. The hidden costs of poverty, from quantity premiums to constrained opportunities and environmental consequences, demand our attention and concerted efforts to address them. By implementing strategies such as strengthening social protection systems, investing in agriculture, and leveraging innovation, we can move closer to a society where the burden of poverty is alleviated, and the cycle of disadvantage is broken, paving the way for a more equitable future.

Here are a list of 10 things that shouldn’t happen as a result of you turning a new leaf and becoming a more practicing (or new) Muslim:
1. You Become Narrow Minded
This is probably one of the worst – and ironic – things that can result from you becoming a more practicing Muslim. Islam has richness and diversity embedded within its history; from its revelation to the interpretations and rulings, from great scholars and intellectuals (think: Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam Ash-Shafi’i & Imam Ahmad), Islam is not something that can be limited to what you have learned from one person within your community, or after watching a few videos on YouTube. Contrary to what you might think, becoming closer to Allah, subhanahu wa ta ‘ala (exalted is He), and the teachings of Islam should make you far more OPEN minded. That is, the more educated you become, the more you realize that differences of opinions within Islam are not a curse, but a blessing. They make the religion easy & practical – a stark juxtaposition to the Islam you may be viewing through your narrow lenses.
Most of the time, it’s narrow mindedness that leads individuals to do the following:
2. You Rebel Against Your Family
Now that you have seen the light, you begin to notice the sins that your family may be immersed in. How dare they not pray? Why do they not attend these lectures? Why don’t they support me – I’m following the same religion as them after all!? Why wasn’t I born into a more practicing family? Why didn’t my parents teach my Qur’an from a younger age!? Why, why, why…?
These, and many more, are thoughts that might cross your mind. But you have to remember a couple of things: a) You will probably never be able to completely change your family – especially your parents b) Humble yourself. It was only a short while ago that you were immersed in the same sins and was it not by the mercy of the Most Merciful, your plight may have never changed.
Coming closer to Allah (swt) should indeed bring you closer to your family (despite their flaws) as now you realize the great importance of kinship in Islam, and the enormous rights of your parents upon you.
3. You Rebel Against Society
You have not only become hyper aware to the ills within your home, but those outside of it too.
You take extremes and ban yourself from things like television, entertainment, social activities, malls, or anything remotely related to “Western Fitnah” (as if fitnah (temptation) does not exist in the Muslim world…but that’s for another time).
Becoming more practicing in the deen (religion) shouldn’t mean that you revile the very society that may have raised you and to which you owe your cultural traditions, norms and values. Instead, it should make you more involved. Being a Muslim means to be balanced – enjoy the good your society has to offer.
Of course, none of us enjoy societal ills such as misogyny, corruption, pollution, poverty and so forth, but that does not mean that we have to turn our backs on it. Let’s be honest, we (especially those born in the West), should be thankful for the peace and civility that we find here but which lacks in many parts of the Muslim world. And remember that Allah (swt) says:
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves,” (Qur’an, 13:11)
This verse is very important for us to remember before we start to revile our family, friends, and societies.
4. You Declare Everything as Haram/Halal
This is an extremely dangerous thing to do. Just because you have learned a bit about Islam, you still have no right to be declaring fatwahs (Islamic legal rulings). This is something left to the most learned of Muslims; those who have dedicated their lives to the study and teachings of Islam.
Further, if you are quick to declare things haram/halal, remember this: you are putting your word against that of Allah (swt) and those who have studied His deen. Pretty scary, huh?
But inevitably, becoming more practicing may make you more quick to declare things as haram/halal.  A word of advice: don’t. Just because someone holds a different opinion on a matter than yours, doesn’t make their opinion less valid. There were differences of opinions during the time of the Prophet ﷺ and after his death! But these differences did not divide Muslims as they do today – instead, they highlighted the beauty of Islam and how it is truly a religion that has transcended time, history, and culture.
5. You Isolate Yourself
Just because you have become more practicing, doesn’t mean that you should only limit yourself to your home or Islamic events, activities, the MSA, etc.
Listen to me: LIVE YOUR LIFE
Allah (swt) has set boundaries that cannot be transgressed. If you remove your head from the sand for 5 seconds, you will realize that there is a LOT of leeway as to what we can do as Muslims.
As long as they do not transgress the bounds of Allah (swt), feel free to engage in the things that bring joy and happiness to your life.
Do not ditch your long-time friends just because you have become more practicing than them. Do not quit your job or schooling (unless, of course they are, or lead to, haram). Do not limit your days to locking yourself in your room and only studying Islam. You will go nuts, trust me.
And my dear Sisters, becoming more practicing should never impede on your rights as a woman. You should never become invisible or unheard. You should never be silenced. Islam is empowering and anything that makes you feel otherwise is not – in my humble opinion – Islam.
Becoming more practicing should open you to the world and new possibilities. Also, it should make you more engaged within your community, whether it be through non-profit organizations, sports, etc.
6. You Lose Your Identity
This is a big one. Sisters and Brothers, you are all unique, creative and different human beings. You should never feel that you now have to wear all black, roll up the bottoms of your pants, or start interjecting Arabic terms like ukhti or akhi into your vocabulary. Also, if you are a revert – you can keep your legal name (unless it is specifically un-Islamic)!
Getting closer to Allah (swt) should bring you closer to your truer self. Embrace your culture, language, experiences and unique nuances. Despite what you may have seen or heard, a “Muslim” can’t truly be categorized, labelled or molded. Embrace your identity and be proud of how Allah (swt) has created you.
7. You Look Down On Others
This speaks for itself. Again, humble yourself because as they say:
Every righteous person has a past, and every sinner has a future.
Also, cut out the discrimination against non-Muslims. They may not be your sisters/brothers in faith, but they are certainly still your sisters/brothers in humanity and deserve every ounce of your respect and kindness.
8. You Instantly Become a “Scholar”
Google, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and any social media site or piece of technology does NOT make you an expert in the field of Islam. Think of the work it takes to become a doctor – would you ever accept the claims of someone who simply Googles their information without any valid form of education?
Do not make fatwahs, do not rebuke others and do not think that you know everything. Simply assume the position of a student. Recognize, too, that being on the receiving end of knowledge is a life-long thing.
9. You Get Married
This is mainly for new reverts to Islam who may have become Muslim for the sake of marrying someone OR who are now being pressured to get married to “preserve their deen.”
To simply put it, if you have just turned back to Allah (swt) (and by just, I mean within the last few years of your life) then let marriage happen, do not try and force it. In the mean time, you have just started the best relationship of all: the one with your Lord. Allow it to come into fruition. Bask in its glory. Truly love and revere those intimate moments you enjoy when you praise, thank, and pray to your Lord.
We talk about completing “half our deen” without realizing that we are not complete. Marry your deen, and the rest will fall into place, bi’ithnillah (by the will of Allah).
10. You Race to Catch Up
Please go easy on yourself. Yes, you may have less Qur’an memorized than your friends. Yes, you may have less Islamic knowledge. Yes, you may not be as steadfast on Islamic acts of worship. Yes, you may constantly stumble, fall, and falter.
But remember, this is your personal journey to Allah (swt), it is not a race. It makes no sense to compare the beginning of your story to another person’s middle. Start from whatever level you may be at and keep going. Do not give up and purify your intentions. It is not about quantity, it is about quality. Remember that.
And Allah (swt) knows best.

We all want love ... are we?

assalamualaikum wbt...

Click here for full article, sebab yang kat bawah ne, kita cedok portion yang kita rasa kita nak share...  semoga bermanfaat yer uols.... love uols, lillahitaala...Insya Allah....

**********************************************************************

We all want love. We want the kind of love that, when our world falls apart, we can turn to that ‘Khadija-esque’ person who will hold us close to ease our mind and heart while we are going through times of despair. We want someone who will never give up on us; who will strive to see us succeed; and who will be willing to make sacrifices to see us happy. However, is what we want what we actually need?
The Prophet Muhammad greatly benefited from the love of Khadija (ra). She gave him provisional and emotional support. This is the love that human beings crave for by nature. At times, it is vital to have someone love you; to have someone believe in you with full faith when the whole world turns its back on you. However, many of us cannot find that love in one specific person.
You may find yourself all alone with no one to love you and with no one to turn to. You may find your world crashing down, with no person to hold you up, wipe your tears, and hear you out. Don’t fret. You may long for that person at the time, but you don’t necessarily need them just yet. You have Allah (swt) and in Him you can find everything you wish for and need. Allah (swt) is the one who gave the Prophet what he needed when it was best for him. He didn’t always have Khadija (ra), but he always had and still has Allah (swt).

(nota nhhas: yang ne sangaaaaattt betul....)

We tend to rely upon the means, and forget who facilitates the means for us. Allah (swt) is the One who willed for Khadija (ra) to propose to the Prophet Muhammad . When a person puts their trust in Allah (swt), He provides for them from means that never crossed their imagination. He was a devout believer, while everyone else around him associated partners with Allah (swt). He was steadfast in his beliefs and had the best of character; thus Allah (swt) gave him exactly what he wanted at the moment he needed it the most. If we abide by the Prophet’s example, Allah (swt) will give and take in our life accordingly, and Allah (swt) knows what is best for us. Allah (swt) says,“… We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.” [Qur’an 50:16]“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me…” [Qur’an 2:186]

(Nota nhhas: Imam mishari pun nangis baca bahagian ne:

Surah Al-Baqarah, ayat 186.
Dan apabila hamba-Ku bertanya padamu tentang Aku maka (jawablah): sesungguhnya Aku amat hampir; Aku perkenankan permohonan orang yang berdoa apabila ia berdoa kepadaKu. Maka hendaklah mereka menyahut seruan-Ku, dan hendaklah mereka beriman kepada-Ku supaya mereka menjadi baik dan betul.

Get to know your Lord, and strive to get closer to Him. Make a sincere effort to build your relationship with Allah (swt). We all know we cannot depend on anyone or anything in this world. And so, when your world comes falling down, and you don’t have what you want, know that you will always have what you need. You need Allah (swt), and He is always there for us no matter what. When Allah (swt) puts you through a hardship, know that every cloud has a silver lining. While in the moment we may not understand why things happen, we at least need to realize they don’t happen without reason. The Prophet said: “Whoever Allah wants good for him, he puts them to the test. He puts them through difficulties; like a diamond or gold that has to be burnt after which anything bad from it is removed so that what you have is the pure diamond or the pure gold..” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Allah (swt) deprives us in order to give something better; something more. The longer we do not have what we want, the more we invoke upon Him in order to receive. All the while He elevates us, and brings us closer and closer to Him. He strengthens our iman to such an extent, that when we finally get what we want, we are not as excited as we would have expected. This is because, what we truly wanted all along was Allah (swt), and our nearness to Him gives us satisfying bliss that is bigger than our wants and desires.

(nota nhhas : amat benar...)

When some people get what they want, they immediately neglect their Lord. So, if Allah (swt) does not give you what you want, take it as a sign to strengthen your connection with him. Allah (swt) says, “But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, ‘Bad times have left me.’ Indeed, he is exultant and boastful…”–[Qur’an 11:10]

(nota nhhas : juga benar pada kebanyakan kita ...)

Allah loves you so much, He wants to make sure you have such strong faith, that when He does give you what you always yearned for, you will not disregard your Lord and thus suffer with worldly gain. Allah follows that verse with, “Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.” [Qur’an 11:11]
Even if your sins pile up to the sky, Allah (swt) says, turn to Him and He will be there for us. His mercy is greater than any sin ever committed. Allah (SWT) says “…My mercy encompasses all things.”[Qur’an 7:156]

Allah (swt) also says reassuringly, “I am as My servant thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself; and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s span, I draw near to him an arm’s length; if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him with haste.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

There is no one who can love us more than Allah. Open your heart, and allow the love of the One who created you to enter where it belongs. Love Him more than you love anyone, and trust Him more than you trust anyone.
Finally, take notice that the Prophet did not chase women, money, or any matter in this world. The Prophet made strenuous efforts to get closer to his Lord, and Allah (swt) sent to him the best of provisions. Prophet Yusuf (ra) was from the most beautiful of men, with women throwing themselves at him, yet he remained patient. He strived for Allah (swt), and Allah honored him with countless glad tidings. When you start to seek out only for Allah (swt), your world begins to fall into place. Know that it is possible to find true love in this life and to live a beautiful love story like the Prophet and Khadija (ra). But heed that true love cannot exist unless it is for the sake of Allah. We love for His sake because we ultimately want to be with our Beloved, our Lord, and our Creator.

sekian.... dikongsikan... semoga bermanfaat... Insya Allah.
salam sayang nhhas...

THE MUSLIM WAY OF SPEAKING

Assalamualaikum wbt...

How many years have you been able easily to say a word without effort, or to form any sentence you wanted to? Without a doubt, you will answer, "It has been many years." However, it probably will not have occurred to most people to ask themselves such a question, because speech is a faculty most of us are born with, and therefore, often merely taken for granted.

Most are able to speak as much or as little as they want, thanks to this God-given ability, and, it would seem, in general, people have become so accustomed to it that they fail to take into account the importance of speech.

Rather, it is of an importance that everyone should recognize; that is, that being able to speak is a blessing, and that Allah granted such an ability for a specific purpose. On the Day of Judgment everyone will be held responsible for every word they have uttered.

Wanita solehah,cerminan Ainul Mardiah...

Markets in Muslim lands rally during Ramadan-study
On Wednesday 4 August 2010, 4:22 SGT
* Stocks in largely Muslim nations outperform in Ramadan
* Researcher cites greater optimism during the month
By Scott Malone

********************************************************************************
BOSTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar marked with fasting and prayer, is also an uplifting time for stock markets in predominantly Muslim countries, according to a study by the University of New Hampshire.
Stock markets in Oman, Turkey, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia generated average returns of 38 percent during the month of Ramadan over the years 1989 through 2007, according to the report compared with their average 4.3 percent returns the rest of the year.
Ahmad Etebari, a professor of finance at the university in Durham, New Hampshire, who was lead researcher on the study, said he was surprised by the finding.
"Fasting is quite an ordeal during those long summer days in the Middle East," said Etebari, who was born in Iran. "I expected to see the opposite."
Since Ramadan is determined by a lunar calendar, its starting date varies from year to year. Etebari found that the markets he analyzed performed strongly, regardless of the timing of Ramadan.
Etebari concluded that the rally resulted from greater optimism during Ramadan. "This is behavioral," Etebari said. "It stems from psychology."
Observance of Ramadan is expected to start on or about Aug. 11 and finish on or about Sept. 10.
In the Middle East, Dubai's main index <.DFMGI> and Abu Dhabi's benchmark <.ADI> are both down so far this year, while stocks in Indonesia <.JKSE>, an officially secular country that has the world's largest Muslim population, are up about 20 percent.
"The implication of our find for investors is obvious," Etebari said. "Investors seeking fast profits in the Muslim world should try to profit from the fast." (Reporting by Scott Malone)

Bersahabat Kerana Allah

KASIH RASULULLAH S.A.W.

Lihat bagaimana Rasulullah S.A.W. sendiri memberitahu Mu’az tentang kasih Baginda sebagai seorang sahabat.

Doa minta dikasihi Rakan-Rakan

Fikirkanlah hati orang lain jua bila mengeluarkan sesuatu kenyataan, terutama orang Melayu.
